special k diet Every person wants to maintain a figure that they can be proud of. A lot of dieters scour for the best program that can help them lose weight fast. With the boom of “dieting” nowadays, the number of program variation is so intimidating that the task of determine which to follow can be daunting at first especially for first time dieters. Usually the goal of adapting a diet plan is to lose those extra pounds and to promote healthy living. Diet programs differs in goals, ideas, time span and method plus considering that every person’s body reacts accordingly results to varied differences.
One of the easiest diets today is the Special K diet. The Special K diet plan developed by Kellogg’s, creator of the Special K product range, estimates a 4-7lbs or a jean size down after the end of 2 weeks. Yes, the Special K diet plan only lasts 2 weeks and it is a very easy diet to follow compared to other diet plan introduced in the past.
What is the Special K diet?
As stated above, you are required to follow the meal plan for 2 weeks and by the end of 2 weeks, Kellogg’s predicted a weight loss of 3-6 lbs (results may vary). The Special K diet, or what is mostly known as Special K Challenge, encourages people who try this program to eat and replace two meals for a bowl of Special K cereal, or any other cereal product of the same manufacturer, plus a healthy dinner at the end of the day with 2 snacks in between. The Special K diet promotes the portion controlled method that most diet plan already practices. Does sound easy right? What does a Special K meal plan looks like?
Breakfast – a bowl of Special K with skim milk or non-fat milk
Snack – a bowl of fresh fruit/vegetables*
Lunch – a bowl of Special K + fresh fruits with non-fat skim milk
Snack – a bowl of fresh fruit/vegetables*
Dinner – meal of your choice**
Snack – Special K snack ***
* for snack options, you are basically given the leeway to choose what you will snack upon but advised to stick to a snack that contains 100 calories and below. Snack may vary to fresh fruits, vegetables, Special K snack bar, bowl of nuts, salad, etc. There are numerous ideas and options for 100 calories below snack so you have to decide on that for the next 2 weeks.
** Dinner does not have any restriction. Although Kellogg’s doesn’t indicate how many calories your meal should comprise, remember that a healthy dinner meal should contain around 400-600 calories.
*** The third snack option can be eaten any time in the afternoon as well if you prefer not to eat before or after dinner. The idea solely is to eat 6 small meals throughout the day.
Does it work?
The judgement varies immensely for several reasons. One, the Special K diet isn’t unique or appealing to start. As stated, it follows the portion control method which is already done by some diet plans. The only reason that Special K is different is because they are promoting their product and it is less than 100 calorie/meal. If you think about it, eating sugar coated cereals does not sound too appealing but that opinion lies to the dieter who wishes to try the Special K Challenge.
Another reason to be hesitant about is the meal plan itself. With no variety but dominantly cereals, you won’t get the nutrition that you need to supply the body of needed nutrition. The Special K diet does not even use whole bran cereals. It does not contain huge amount of fiber that proves to be very helpful with most diet plans. Remember that the Special K line is purely processed goods, and processed food is not so very healthy in spite the goal and method of said diet plan.
In addition to that, the diet can be very monotonous and boring. Who wants to eat a cereal meal 28 times (1 cereal bowl x 2 times a day x 14 days) in the span of 2 weeks? Granted that you may have the snack and dinner of your choice but the majority of the meal plan is the Special K cereal products and take note that Kellogg’s suggests highly that snacks should be Special K snack bars as well. Now tell me, doesn’t that make you not want to eat cereals again?
Lastly, the reliance of the meal plan to the Special K product range can be unhealthy. As indicated, these products are process and can contain a lot of sugar so that is unhealthy in itself right there. To top that if you compare the Special K to other cereal substitute you can see a huge difference in the nutritional value.
What is the verdict?
On the upside of this whole equation is that potion control is a very effective method. If you control what you eat and to count all those calories, results will show after 2 weeks or less but keep in mind that this is not a diet plan for the long run. It can be a “starter diet” to help you motivated towards a bigger goal but to adapt this for a permanent diet plan may not provide you with substantial results.
